THE CALVADOS ECONOMY
The department's GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is of 15,902 million euros. The GDP per inhabitant is 23,902 euros and the GDP per job is 59,701 euros. (2005)
Calvados reunites 42% of the region's industrial employment, over half of which are concentrated in the Caen conurbation (motor industry with the « Move’o » Competitiveness Cluster and electronics with the brand new « monetics » hub around NXP). Other industrial hubs are concentrated around Lisieux (metallurgy, wood and paper, agrifood), Vire (the « Vallée des alliages » metallurgy hub, agrifood , and Bayeux.
The region's industrial mainstays, the motor industry (PSA, Robert Bosch Electronics, Knorr Bremse, Filtrauto…) and the agrifood industry (Isigny-Sainte-Mère dairy cooperative, Lactalis, Nestlé…) remain healthy. The agrifood sector demonstrates consistent vitality focusing on quality, innovation and export. Alongside the beef and dairy sectors (Soviba, Brocéliande…), there is an expanding seafood industry (Frial, Alliance Océane).
Among consumer goods industries, employment in the pharmaceutical (Schering Plough, Laboratoire Gilbert, Bottu Aventis Pharma), perfumery and household product sectors has increased over the last few years.
Since 2001, the salaried employment market has increased by 5,000 jobs throughout the economy, particularly due to the growth of the services sector, in keeping with national trends.
