Seawards: Manche borders the sea on all three sides
Inland: landscapes of bocage and hedgerows
Free time: leisure activities, museums, boating, windsports, hiking...
Out of town, villages and country hamlets offer a network of services and trade outlets.

A land of history, Manche has a rich and varied cultural and architectural heritage, bearing witness to both prosperous and gloomy eras alike: churches, church abbeys (Mont-Saint-Michel, Hambye, La Lucerne, Lessay, Cerisy-la-Forêt), cathedral (Coutances), castles (Regnéville-sur-Mer, Crosville-sur-Douve, Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, Canisy…), town houses (Valognes…), manor houses (Saussey, Parc d’Ouville...).

Several cultural events are organised in many of the region's towns. Ever-increasing music and cinema enthusiasts gather together each year to enjoy the department's festivals : Jazz sous les pommiers in Coutances, the Irish and British film festival in Cherbourg, the Voix du Monde festival in Genêts, the Traversées de Tatihou, Villes en Scène, the Papillons de Nuit festival in Saint-Laurent-des-Cuves, Festival Hétéroclites in Saint-Lô, Cinémovida in Cherbourg...

And to satisfy recreational needs, Manche offers a profusion of leisure sites, historical and ethnological museums, artists' birthplaces and homes, historical monuments: the Musée du Granite (granite museum) in St-Michel-de-Montjoie, the Musée régional de la Poterie (pottery museum) in Ger, the Musée du meuble normand (Normandy furniture museum), the Maison de la dentelle (lace museum) and Musée de la Poeslerie (bellfoundry) in Villedieu-les-Poêles, Musée Maritime (maritime museum), Lime Kilns in Regnéville-sur-Mer, Musée Christian Dior in Granville, J.F Millet's home in Gréville-Hague, Jacques Prévert's home in Omonville-la-Petite, Cap Lévi Fortress, Island of Tatihou, the Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg……

Manche is a paradise for enthusiasts of sailing, equestrian sports, boating trips (to the Chausey archipelago from Granville), hiking... The department's stud farms are among the world's most famous with, in particular, a Haras National (national stud farm) in Saint-Lô.

In an effort to maintain a strong network of its typical borough centres, the Departmental Council contributes to sustaining rural craftsmanship and trade in order to enhance the local economy.
50% of Manche's population lives in a rural environment.
