Jazz sous les Pommiers in Coutances, an annual event during Ascension week.
Over 35,000 tickets sold in 2009
Concerts also open to "cousin music" styles: blues, but also ethnic, electronic or modern music…

The Jazz sous les Pommiers festival is held every year in Coutances (Manche).

The festival was created specifically for jazz enthusiasts by Thierry Giard and Gérard Houssin. The original idea was to create a jazz event, to render jazz accessible to all and to encourage musicians to play it. The inaugural edition took place in 1982. The festival is traditionally organised during Ascension week.

1990 was to mark a major turning point with 7,000 tickets sold. The festival was becoming increasingly popular. Its renown was escalating. Increasingly more spectators, concerts… open to "cousin music" styles. To blues, but also to ethnic, electronic or modern music…

Jazz sous les Pommiers' public has been scrutinised since its 2008 edition:
Visitors stay longer at the festival (on average 3.5 days), to enjoy 3.6 paying performances and 3.5 free performances. Jazz sous les Pommiers is a Norman festival that attracts a Norman audience. Jazz sous les Pommiers is among 5 of Normandy's leading festivals.

Well established within the French cultural landscape, Jazz sous les Pommiers is now looking to cross a new bridge, and to affirm its credibility as an international festival. For the festival's ever-increasing popularity and renown already stretch well beyond our frontiers. The British saxophonist, Andy Sheppard's long-term stay, the presence of European programmers in Coutances and a close partnership with the London Jazz Festival are but a few examples.

In 2009: 65,000 visitors throughout the week, including 35,400 spectators inside concert venues
