WHAT IS A U.T.P.?
Urban Transport Perimeter (not to be confused with UTP – Urban Transport Plan).
The U.T.P. determines the traffic zones for public transport within towns and their surrounding areas.

WHAT IS THE U.T.P. USED for?
- To organise public transport for the population and school bus services
- To optimise local servicing by non-urban public road transport

An innovation:

Caen in GLT (Guided Light Transit), known as the tramway or TVR and whose main characteristic is that it can leave its guiding track (central track) to be used as a bus.
- 29 communes, 223,106 inhabitants
- 27 million passengers per year
- 30 bus routes, 4 of them offering high quality service
- 2 tramway lines
- 25 direct school routes
- 3 business shuttles
- 1,134 pick-up points
- 24 trams
- 168 buses, 44 of which are articulated


Existing facilities are powered off-rail via auxiliary diesel-electric traction motors. The tramcar is propelled by an electric motor which is in turn powered by a system of aerial catenaries.

Its capabilities: can negotiate a 13% slope, 13m curves and offers excellent manoeuvrability in urban areas.

Other districts use town bus services which also complete the Caen public transport network.

- Flers: serviced population – 28,392 inhabitants; 13 communes; 3 routes; 10 round trips; total distance - 38km; 801,618 journeys
- Saint-Lô: serviced population – 28,310 inhabitants; 3 communes; 6 routes; total distance - 45km; 855,333 journeys
